Six Thinking Hats in iPhone/iPad Application

Hi! In June, I put down a very simple program into iPad for recording the discussions on Six Thinking Hats with my children. With time, more features were added to the program. Now, I found it is quite user friendly. I do not believe it is possible to write a good computer program to teach thinking, especially for teaching children. I believe this is the jobs of parents and teachers. But I believe this program can help the users to practicing thinking, and use it as a tool to assist the teaching. Hope it is useful. Any comments are welcome.

The following is an example of using the App. It works in iPad, iPhone and iPod touch on iOS 3.2 and up.

(I found the previous post takes too much time for loading the images. So, I use only one image.)

Adonis,
I believe this site is already a white marble structure, gathering people to think. I believe a virtual one will allow accessible to more people. A virtual one connected with mobile devices allow people to join anywhere, such as when stuck in a traffic. It will be even better if the mobile devices include the thinking tools to support the thinking processes.

Adonis, one Apple's document mentioned tha App should try to convert the iPhone from a phone to the device for that App, e.g. a device for listening to music, a device for playing games, a device for playing piano... So, I was trying to create an App that can convert an iPhone or an iPad to a thinking device. That includes a quick way to guide people to get ideas with the six aspects of the STH, store the ideas, at any time take out for review and revision. For an iPhone and iPad, it takes very short time to get the App running. The easy of use can help to fill in a few minutes of waiting time by a thinking. With this, it is possoble to put down a red hat in the morning while waiting for the lift, a green hat while waiting for table for lunch ....

I am also a main user of this program for my own thinking and teaching. I use it as an education tool with my children. For my son, who just became a teen, I suggest him to fill in the hats for a topic in an iPad. I let him to do this alone so that he can think more deeply. After that I discuss with him the ideas. So far, I believe this allows deeper communications between us. For my daughter (8 years old), I discuss with her while we input the information together. A few months ago, I need to use the motivation of allowing them to play games in the iPad or buying new iPad games. But now it seems to me that both of them see some advantages in this and are more willing to do the thinking.

I also like to get comments from other users. By the way, Apple offered some codes for free download of the App (US Apple store only). If anyone want to have the codes, please give me a message.

Adonis, yes, we can start another topic on the ways to reduce CO2. I will also find time to update this blog on this program.

Adonis,
I could not add the link in the previous post using the link icon. I need to delete my own post and re-post again. I hope it was not due to my mistake that deleted your post.

I usually do not believe in the forecasts especially for so many years. But I believe it is possible a good guess using the current known facts from the International Energy Agency. With my personal view, I think the change is too slow in solving the green house effect.

Yes. For the profile picture, I was pointing to a castor plant. One more image below:

Adonis,
International Energy Agency published World Energy Outlook with perdition up to 2035. Detail information can be found from the site: http://www.worldenergyoutlook.org/

For your question, the executive mentioned of the Outlook mentioned:
- .., world primary energy demand increases by 36% between 2008 and 2035, from around 12 300 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) to over 16 700 Mtoe, or 1.2% per year on average. This compares with 2% per year over the previous 27‐year period.
- Emerging economies, led by China and India, will drive global demand higher

Currently, my main hobby is planting trees in southern China, such as Tung oil, castor and jatropha, and converting the seeds to oils that can be used to replace fossil oil. I believe this is something I can try in the area of developing renewable energy.

Adonis, I guess very quickly, the idea of cryogenic may not be needed. Life expectancy of most countries showed a continual increasing trend in the last 50 years. I think at one point, in a period of time, such as 5 years, the increase in life expectancy can be close to the period, i.e. 5 years. Meaning?

Where is heading? Need more thinking !!

Continue from the previous post.

For the economic aspect, we also want every person to be more efficiency.
(1) We want people to think better, which is probably one of the goals of this society.
(2) We want people to be better informed, so that better decision can be made.
(3) We want people to be better connected for better family life and having more close friends. Hopefully, this will give less personal problems.

If these can be better achieved with these mobile devices, electricity is probably just a minor part of the problem.

Adonis, this is a good point that all these devices need energy. But they may not need more power. Let's first look at the engineering side of this issue:

(1) Power usage: desktop computer > notebook computer > tablets > phones

That means if we shift more of computing activities from desktop to phones, we will use less power.

(2) Newer devices now use more energy saving features, e.g., smaller semiconductor transistors that uses less power, shutdown some of the devices when not in use, better efficiency of batteries, ...

(3) I believe the scientific achievements will continue to move into the direction of using energy more efficient.

Adonis.... No need to resist!

These devices help people to connect to others not in a touchable distance. Once the device is with me, we can feel my friends are also with me, not just the few persons stand next to me. While walking in a remote forest in China, I can teach my daughter in Hong Kong on 4-digit addition.

I believe a new set of manner is coming, such as no phone calls at the seats in trains in Japan, and no phone/messaging/email during meetings. But even without the devices, there are always people not following the traditional manner as a gentlemen or a lady.

With the devices, some people can still be very nice, especially if we consider the persons next to us.

My son just became a teenager. He likes to argue, but unable to put down the arguments systematically. It is also not easy for him to accept parents' points. Face-to-face discussion usually ended up in arguments.

Now, I have been trying to ask him to spent ~10min on preparing a sequence before we start discussing the issue. Now, less argument, but I would like to see if this can help him to develop skills to convince other people.
