But then I found out I was just suffering from sexdaily [1]
It isn't exactly current affairs as such any more ... not what you might call breaking news ... but it's been on my mind recently and someone, coincidentally, pointed me to this article today
Taking for granted that it will be an elite that becomes the benificiary of extended mortality ... let alone immortality ... so, that's not the discussion point I wanted to get into:
The problem is that those who do not learn from the lessons of History are not only doomed to repeat them, but doom everyone else to repeat them too
So ... no matter what the ultimate population size, nor its provenance ... people living long enough to *finally* actually *learn* something might be better than producing free-for-all offspring as we do now
But, as the author of the piece does, I think there are ramifications that bear thinking about, albeit that I don't necessarily draw the same conclusions,
To that end, despite the (IMO) unneccessary length and all too obvious 'punchline' (you can't really call it a 'twist in the tail'), I thought people might find David Brin's "Kil'n People" an interesting read

Comment by LoL on May 15, 2012 at 2:40 Colour is a descriptor, yes, but only of a single property .. and objects and entities have many properties, so colour is not exclusive - I don't know if the hat is white, or large, or pointed, or old, or ornate, or stolen, or magical ... but it is curious : )
Perhaps the wisdom hat is the superpositied singularity of the six hats, rather than a separate one?
Comment by LoL on May 14, 2012 at 13:35 Hmmmm ... and I was just warming to the 'places' paradigm too ; )
I'm not sure curiosity could be viewed as a 'posture', so much as a state, but I'm probably just being too rigid in my thinking - Po there were a 'Curious Hat', for instance
Comment by LoL on May 13, 2012 at 21:27 I like the analogy, Luis
I think I may be the fortunate owner of two residences [1] that I use as bases of operation: Scepticism and Curiosity - The latter allows me to be open-minded and pursue alternatives, the latter to prevent such flights of fancy from venturing too dangerously close to the Sun; the two together allowing me to take a practical and pragmatic approach to creativity and a creative approach to practical matters
I---
[1[ may have others, but this is the first time I've thought about my own thinking using this metaphor, so I need time to explore and analyse it : )
Comment by LoL on May 12, 2012 at 23:17 It is indeed, Luis ... LOTS of zeros ; )
But I think it hubristic ... to put it charitably ... to assume that mimicking, let alone reproducing, the kind of cognitive processes underlying our our most mundane, everyday experience is simply a matter of processing power and I remain sceptical

Comment by LoL on May 12, 2012 at 23:06 It's a bit syllogistic ... his reasoning being the unwritten coda ... but I think I follow it
