I'd like to know if someone can help me on how to extract concepts.
Mr De Bono says they breed ideas, and they are one of the key components in (for example) having a beautiful mind.
On the other hand, concepts are not definitions, neither practical ideas.
What would be the concept of the Human Hair (head) for example. Could something like our hair have a concept?
do concepts have anything to do with function?
for example a so-called "concept-car" is that so or is just a fancy name?
I suspect that once created the habit of identifying concepts, I would be able to see a concept in almost everything I could see.
please let me know your thoughts

I live near the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia and see many MOT. There is a standing trike with no pedals that maneuvers by ither centripetal or parabola energy/force. I cannot find the name of the MOT to share. It is does not appear as fast. It takes up more space. Yet it would be fun for the variety and strangeness of it.

Comment by Enrique Sanguino on July 3, 2012 at 21:52 Have you seen this three wheel scooter?
I bought one for myself and it has turned out to be a brilliant piece of design.
Why?
because it can take you quickly over short distances (for example from home to the subway station)
it can be easily folded and taken into the subway or a car boot
it is fun to use
it saves your energy (and sweat, particularly in a hot city like Beijing) and time spent on walking
it is light enough to be carried
compared to a skateboard it is easier to keep balance at any time.
This is a fresh concept from and old idea (skateboard).
Concepts breed ideas. That means when developing the habit of extracting concepts we can multiply ideas working backwards.
This scooter is one example that I want to use to work backward and find the broader concepts as it cascades down. Like Dr De Bono says, go from the general broad concept to the more specific (when it turns into an idea).
for example:
A. Self propelled mot (concept)
a.4 Human propelled mot (concept)
a.4.3 three-wheel scooters (idea)
like this:
I stick to Dr De Bono's words as much as possible because I want to understand from the source. On the other hand the discussion on this blog it helps to practice and to understand other's points of view, also that the making of ideas is an infinite space where there are no absolutes.
Does it help to add to your beautiful outline Enrique Sanguino, or to make a free association list that is not organized and has no appearance of focus? I have given you both.

Ok, here we go:
Problem: finding means of transport (mot) for short and long distances in big cities. Particularly a solution that will enable people to walk less have more fun, and get quicker to their destination.
Concept levels (from the broad to the more specific):
A. Self propelled mot
B. Non-self propelled mot
A. Self propelled mot:
a.1 internal combustion engine propelled:
a.1.1 cars, trucks, buses, vans
a.1.2 bikes, trikes
a.1.3 planes (fixed wing)
a.1.4 helicopters (10+ varieties including the Chinook)
a.1.5 ultra-light planes with no motor? Gliders?
a.1.6 trains & subway (think Disney World, Japan, magnets)
a.1.7 boats (gondalas as in Venice or San Antonio, motorboats, barges, paddlewheel as in New Orleans, ferry)
a.2 electric propelled:
a.2.1 cars & trucks, golf carts, Zip Cars (http://www.zipcar.com/austin/campaign?gclid=CO2Csv7D_bACFQed7QodYCAT-Q)
a.2.2 bikes, motorized, with trailer, recumbent,
a.2.3 scooters (scooter clubs were in the Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mERICxC7R9c)
a.2.4 trains & trams, vintage, sight seeing, people watching, now they have televisions in some of them
a.2.5 electric propelled chair, ATV, golf cart communitites where everyone drives golf carts or electric propelled chairs in the neighborhood (Peachtree City, Georgia, USA, has Lanes for the golf carts of the whole town, and not just for the golf course.
a.3 Non-human propelled mot:
a.3.1 Horse riding, donkey, mule (can you see burros along the trails in the Grand Canyon? Why not skyscrapers?)
a.3.2 dogs (like in the Arctic, or North Pole)
a.3.3 kiting, gliding
a.3.4 elephants,
a.3.5 camels (they can go a while without drinking. I am not convinced they do not need to urinate often.)
a.4 Human propelled mot
a.4.1 skates (ice/roller/blade/sneakers)
a.4.2 skate boards, with and without sail and rudder (like a surf board), handles, plain, souped up
a.4.3 three-wheel scooters (there is an odd standing one I have seen on my blog http://www.fearthounot4.blogspot.com)
a.4.4 bicycle, (different eras, souped up, 3 speed, 10 speed, off road)
a.4.5 tricycle (with a basket, with a trailer, with a place for a passenger?)
a.4.6 person inside a big wheel or ball or gyroscope
a.4.7 person walking/running/skipping/hopping
B. Non-self propelled mot:
b.1 person being pushed or thrown: (rocket propelled as in the circus)
b.1.1 in a trolley (New Orleans, or gondola like the one for Stone Mountain or St. Thomas Island or some ski lifts
b.1.2 in a wheelchair, simple with no motor. The person can move with their feet or can move with their hands or have someone else push them with the handles from the back. People get hurt in this MOT frequently
b.1.2 in a big cardboard plane, that is weatherproof, a box with wheels or on logs to move like the Egyptians may have built the Pyramids, pulleys and wenches to lift
Parachutes, slides, rappelling, rubber bands, bungee, dental floss rope (I once talked to architects from Hong Kong or from Kuwait about the tallest skyscaper and the plans they had for disembarking from the rides, and the contingency/emergency exits)
I've run out of ideas at the moment.
Will get back to you with more.
have a good day 再见!

Extracting may entail different tools for different people. I mentioned the Irlen Instittue with color film for people who perceive differently. There are special courses for artists who need to learn math with symbols that are entirely made up of colors and then there might be music notation for some to learn math. Frame of reference may be much more important than any other aspect.
Did I miss seeing the "Car pool?"
Park and Ride is another form of carpool.
Sometimes a van is used instead of a large bus.
Relocating so that one lives above where one works is another option.
The virtual world has brought many speakers/participants to a place through technology.
Escalators
Elevators
Stairs
Pulleys
Dragons
Carrier Pigeon
Morse Code
Smoke Signals
Telegram
Railway (legal and illegal)
Silver Comet type trails (60 miles long with 2% grade)
Limo
Winnebago (take your home with you at all times)
Send a video
Involve other people so that there are more resources
#Instantbuddy (ask a stranger to accompany you to certain reasonable points for safety/savings)
Donkey
Mule
Ostrich
Carriage
Taxi
Rickshaw
Gondola (San Antonio also uses them)
Barge (common in many places)
Paddle-wheel ship
Ski Lift Trolley (in the islands, Stone Mountain)
Bridges for walking/biking
ATV
Golf Cart communities

Comment by Enrique Sanguino on July 1, 2012 at 14:41 I am interested in extracting concepts to generate ideas in order to solve problems.
But first I want to understand about concepts, as well as other formal tools to generate ideas like Provocation (Escape, Reversal, Distortion, Exaggeration, Wishful Thinking; Movement (focus on the difference, positive aspects, movement to movement, special circumstances) & Random entry.
So, from what I can see there is a lot for me to learn and practice. After reading your answers I have a sense that everyone have a different interpretation of what concept means, which makes it more likely for me to have a different one too. However, since this is creativity, there are no fixed rules, so I reckon everyone here is an artist of their own perceptions.
About artists, I visited once the Dali exhibition in the South Bank in London, and watched a short clip about the "madness" of Dali. That leaves me wandering, if Dr.De Bono's ideas have been taken to the big screen?.
I imagine it may be something like that movie, a journey into the unknown "get ready to see the unseen, to mash your mind into pieces and then put it all together differently and making it more beautiful" this kind of experience (no drugs involved please).
Pure creativity does not come easily.
I also have bad habits, like trying to learn by heart and store in the memory. I think this patter does not help in learning about creativity. I am blocked to write some practical concepts until (this is what my brain tells me) I know more about "what these weir ideas about creativity are" (too much critical thinking makes "it" unsure about what is what).
It's a bit like learning chinese (since I live in Beijing I have to). No matter how much vocabulary or grammar I study on my own (or in the classroom) I am blocked to speak and listen unless I practice it all, which will happen in about 5 years time. But (following the same patters as before) cannot speak because feel I forgot everything, when in fact I haven't. Here is that fear again.
So far I can put some blame in the fears of making mistakes, of know "knowing it enough", of not being absolute (knowing or don't). These I could call "some brain patterns" hold me back. But now I can see where the problems are, I can do something about it.
This is it for the moment. I will get back to all you when my mind is more clear about the questions I asked you initially.
best

Esau in the Bible had red hair. He is described as beautiful, and my name is derived from his name. "Fair," is beautiful, light, and the way it was spelled in Scotland was "Faerey" and also had the added meaning "Fey." Getting into the concepts extraction may mean studying words with the help of dictionaries. I learned this through genealogy research about the name I use. It is not me. Something closer to me may be the nicknames I have received or chosen. So a book may be helpful in a concept of the past and an idea may mean a leap in understanding and coining a new use, a new understanding. A misspelled word may mean the concept is forever changed (Bible, "rot" instead of "root" completely changes the meaning and this was common in the Gutenberg Bible as an occurrence.) Adonis, there are many ways to learn piano. A piano takes many years to play. An autoharp has the same strings a piano has, and the chords are listed on the instrument and the notes on the strings. It takes 10 minutes to learn to play a song on autoharp, and 30 minutes to learn to tune the autoharp with a digital tuner and harp peg wrench (the same wrench is used as for a full harp). The harp is much closer to the Greek Lyre and vibrates along the body, whether on the lap, the chest or the back. The autoharp is a harp form and can be placed in the back seat of any car and along the back of someone on any bike (gig bag with strap helps). http://www.charharp.blogspot.com has pictures of the autoharp, and the older posts show me with some of the 90 kids I taught at the Boys and Girls Club in Douglasville, GA a few years ago. The children took the pictures, I didn't of the older posts. A piano is a harp inside a coffin. You cannot put the piano in the back seat of a car. An electronic piano is still too much like an organ for me in touch when I play. Extracting the concepts of instruments, learning, teaching, meanings and experiences is a soup. The frame of reference is different for each of us. We are unique, just like everyone else, except my friend in Indonesia who cannot say "unique." He pronounces it "eunuch."
This summer I had a relationship studying piano for 4 weeks. I see myself as a guide or coach. I looked at the link you referenced, Luis, and saw concepts of defining and instructing. Extracting the concepts of defining and instructing looks like a different animal for each one of us because of a frame of reference. My father, the dirigible, fixed wing, and helicopter mechanic also had three degrees in education, including one in special education on the master's level in the 1970's. I typed his papers and sometimes attended classes with him. We spent a summer as a family with http://sheddtutoring.org/ because my sisters were struggling in school and I had disengaged. I had no learning disabilities. It was just boring. So I tutored with the sandpaper imaginary drawing for other students, and my sisters got free tutoring because my parents and I volunteered to help. The more senses involved the better, including taking the skin and rubbing the fingers with phonics on sandpaper. I have heard the concept of "You cannot learn someone," as well as the concept, "Learning is caught." Listening to someone play piano, sometimes their hands placed over your hands is the same as helping someone grasp a golf club. A picture might be enough, and the touch may be "how the learning is caught." I have seen masking tape on piano keys with the letters and numbers so people can have more of their senses involved in learning how to "read" music while playing. I personally know what it is like to practice six hours with only short breaks on the piano. I cannot give that to anyone unless they are willing to sit it out or do the practice themselves. A beginner can decide how much time to practice. People who are wired for music may be like people wired for these addictive social networking hobbies. When you tell them to practice 10 minutes they may be on for hours.
