Leaders are needed to show people thepah that leads them to where they want to reach. A small child would need to hold hand of his mother when to show him the way to his school-first few times. One seeks passerby's help to find the way to a desired place in unknown town. But if one has access to google earth through his mobile he need not ask anyone. Likewise, business leaders, social leaders or that matter political leaders are required to lead us to the unknown future. Hoever,if we have intelligent specialized expert systems we need not depend upon leaders to show the path more. Well, this may sound like science fiction today but could be a real possibility in future. Leaders, prepare for job options ! At least their importance as sole providers or path finders would get reduced.

Hi Asa,

Re:

I agree and am working on a project to facilitate that. Whether anyone will be interested in using it is another matter, so far the response has been underwhelming. As I said earlier I think many people might prefer to keep leaders on as scapegoats.

This article provides deeper insights into my hunch that all leadership styles except the invisible one requires big egos. But all leaders must find a balance. Maybe this is where it all goes wrong. . .

Here are some more leadership styles.

If the leadership is not invisible, let it be Laissez-Faire Leadership.

But nevertheless, it might be good to let people manage others for a day or two. this may increase their understanding. And yes, managing people is hard work. . . since people tend to have their own ideas. . . and ways of doing things. . .

Yet, my idea is to get rid of leaders - so slowly there would be less and less people wanting to promote themselves and just get on with doing things. Why promote yourself for something that is not going to exist for much longer?

I like the idea of people choosing their own job as well, Asa - as long as they don't promote themselves to their own level of incompetence. Eg. Some people think they would like to manage and could be good at it, but they really aren't. At least not day after day after day managing. I speak from experience. :)

Hi Cal, great article. I like this bit. . .

"Key to the company’s change efforts: a strong focus on self-direction and autonomy among staff. Tokio employees can choose their work hours and workplace, supervision is kept to a minimum, and staff are encouraged to choose their own job according to their ability and preferences."

This is a only the beginning. . .

A link I got in my email the other day, titled Leaders: Do We Really Need Them? How really accurate it is......:

Hi Phil, I think leaders do not have time for it either;-)

Everyone can choose from a selection of food - "I like apples for breakfast rather than cereals".

So everyone could in principle, push a button with a selection of alternative actions. A machine could count the votes and then the action with the majority votes is carried out - no need for a leader. We get paid for the number of votes we make every day - some votes could be related to our job, some to our community, society etc. Votes to be cast outside working hours. And everyone can make suggestions for plausible alternatives.

Hi Asa?

Why do adults need a leader?

Because not everyone has the time, the strength, the maturity, the energy, the disposition etc. at any given point in time to do the job of leading.

It may be the job of a leader to develop and suggest plausible alternatives for everyone else to choose from.

The goal of parenting could be described as one day letting go of your child. Parents should always support their children but they should allow their (older) children to find their own way in life.
Why is that not the task of a leader? Why do adults need a leader?
I do not get the idea of bringing up your children to trust their own voice only to hand them over to another leader who has a different goal and agenda. Is this because leaders are not good enough leaders to had over the responsibility? Or is there another reason that I have not understood;-)
