In March 1980, the oil rig the Alexander Keilland sank with the loss of 123 lives. At the time I was on a derrick barge not far from the scene. Part of the problem was that the rig listed before sinking, meaning that the lifeboats were unusable on two sides. On reading about the Costa Concordia this week and how the lifeboats were unable to be launched because of listing, one of my thoughts was “31 years later and this is still happening?”
