MYTHSABOUT THINKING

Among many myths about thinking one is that thinking is natural and healthy. Therefore we should think all the time.

Nothing can we far from truth as this statement. Thinking in language is learnt.Thinking all the time, like eating, walking or sleeping all the time would be harmfull rather than do any good. Just as there are physical fitness enthusiasts who over do exercises, there are people in order to keep their minds active and creative keep the mind busy for long hours. Not just the brain… Continue

Life is too long to be bored

Once one has figured out what one likes and dislikes, the only logical approach is to minimax the two, resulting in as much as possible of the former (thankyou very much) and as little as possible of the latter (please)

Once one has achieved this, every day is pretty much the same as every other

That's so mind-numbingly, spirit-crushingly tedious that the only thing left to do that isn't boring is to change the status quo

The… Continue

Turmoil

Past Successes
Future Tears
Perpetual Motion
Over the years

What did I do?
What should I have done?
What should I do?
What will I become?

Should I stay?
Or should I go?
Take a chance?
Or just say no?

Dreams or Nightmares
Thought or Emotion
Hopes or Fears
I've just no notion

You are not so smart

Simple ... and very basic ... but worth a look

NEBE

In replying to Debono softwares I coined the term nebe (not excellent but enough)

So, okay, it's hardly the moment of inspiration-cum-genius that is ebne, but, hey, it's quite possibly one of those 'easy to say it was obvious in hindsight' moments ... so I'm inordinately pleased with myself and there's nothing anyone can do about that, so there!… Continue

I don't OU

I had an idea a number of years ago about using an investment model to subvert debt and, at the same time, debt-trading: I would invest a sum of money in someone by loaning it to them

Later, when I needed it back, instead of calling it in, I would sell the debt to someone else

The only stipulation was that, upon taking on that debt, the new creditor was obliged to do the same - They could not call in the debt from the person I had originally invested in

This… Continue

Zen and the Art of Juggling

Taking a Zen approach to juggling must surely lead to the insight that juggling things is for the apprentice / journeyman seeking enlightenment - The true master never juggles anything at all ... moving things through the air just being a distraction from the deeper meaning ... the Truth ... behind juggling.

The true master of the art simply moves through the Universe, juggling it around them as they go - In fact, the ultimate demonstration of juggling must… Continue

The Ultimate TV Program

I think I may have hit upon what might be the logical conclusion of TV

We have so-called Reality TV, where people vicariously gawp at other's anything-but-real pseudo-lives

We have SOS TV where you, or someone you know, has their ineptitude /lack-of-taste / poverty / whatever held up for all to gawp at, whilst the program makers / presenters tell you how to decorate, how to dress, how to garden, how to cook, whatever

We have Aspirational… Continue

Balanced-Input Neural-Vector Search-Spaces

There's an idea I've been meaning to explore for over ten years now - I really should do something about it

Take a neural-net and give it N groups of balanced inputs: (X1, Y1, Z1 ... N1), (X2, Y2, Z2 ... N2) ... (Xn, Yn, Zn ... Nn)

Each tuple across the input groups, or hidden layer, is treated as an allele and the individual weights within it as the genetic ordering of the DNA within it

For each hidden layer you have the same number of nodes as in a… Continue

Love at first byte?

Yet another weird idea from the shadowy recesses of my mindscape is about to ooze into the net, thereby infecting all those who read it - A born holding-room for subversive ideas with no home of their own strikes again!

I don't really know what to do with this idea ... Should I write a short story; a novel; what?

To start with imagine two A.I.s, with a relatively sophisticated degree of intelligence ... more or less the equal of an average… Continue

Anarchy in the UK?

Anarchy ... What is it?

Let's start with what it's not, shall we?

It's not a philosophy. It's not a belief system. It's not a political agenda or cause.

Oh, I know there's a lot of people who think that it is one of those things ... I know that some people call themselves or others 'anarchists'

But these people are idiots ... plain and simple

Anarchy is not lack of government or organisation or people running around doing whatever… Continue

If memory serves ... Then who is its master?

Why do I remember? What purpose does it serve? I can't feel it, taste it, smell it ... I delude myself that I can see, perhaps even hear, it ... but I am a liar ... There is no Past or Future, merely the ever Present ... but faced with the terrifying loneliness of that prospect, we tell ourselves stories ... shadowplays, flickering and false, on the cave walls of our minds, to comfort our selves in the cold and the dark, whilst we pray to the spirit of hope for another way, another day ... that… Continue

A unified theory of knowledge?

OK ... without wanting to sound trite ... I'd apply Occam's Razor to the issue and say that

Postulates

1) Personality is the dynamic persistence of memory

2) Memory is the dynamic persistence of qualia

3) Descartes was right...I am...All else is speculation

4) de Bono is on the button with his *Vilage Venus* concept

Syllogistic Conclusions

Therefore:

4) If all I… Continue

Who's been sleeping in MY trousers!?

The use of radio frequency identification tags (RFID tags) in the retail sector raises a whole number of issues concerning privacy and criminality.

As one correspodent in Computing Magazine suggested, there is no guarantee that any tags might not be overseen (willfully or otherwise) at the point of sale.

Given that it would be entirely feasible to link your (credit) card details to a given tag ... and to continue to monitor the tag after purchase ... this is not… Continue

The mass ownership of private airborne vehicles must NEVER be allowed!

It's bad enough on the roads as it is ...

Now picture these cheery scenarios:

1) You're pootling along on a nice sunny day (on holiday / out for a Sunday drive / whatever), when the kid upstairs is sick over the side of the car ... or drops a can of Coke out of the window, straight into your intake - WHAM!

2) You're driving along, when some idiot who isn't looking where s/he's going decides to change altitude ... right underneath you -… Continue

Atheism is unscientific

Since the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, the only truly scientific ... i.e. popperian ... stance is agnosticism

God is not a scientifically tractable proposition and any other stance is, therefore, an article of faith

And faith is unscientific

Richard Dawkins, j'accuse!

Goodbye, cruel world?

So ...

What's going on around here?

Is there anything to engage me enough to carry on, or will it be, in the words of Moe Szyslak, "suicide for me again", so to speak?

Is there a rational reason for not killing one's self?

All the reasons I can think of are emotive ... appealing to emotion or 'morality' ...

  • Caring about the fate of one's immortal soul (even if only out of agnostic fear of actually having one worth the…
