World Thinking Report 5

A young man in Tunis is unable to find work ends up selling vegetables from a cart. The police confiscate his cart. In despair he burns himself to death. That incident lead to the fall of the government of Tunis and then the fall of the government of Egypt and probably also on Libya together with unrest in Bahrain, Yemen and Syria. All this is due to the power of the Internet and modern media. No other ordinary person in the whole world of history has had such an effect.

The… Continue

Some years ago at the UN in New York I tried to set up a group to generate additional ideas. There were several meetings and the Secretary General attended at least one of them. The project proved impossible because the representatives held that they were not there to think but to represent their countries. This is logical and understandable. If a representative came up with an idea that his or her country did not like then that person was not a true representative.

So there is no… Continue

Thinking is by far the most important human skill. Our survival, our success and our progress depend upon our thinking. Why then is ‘thinking’ almost totally neglected? The reason is that there is a huge complacency about our thinking.

We believe that analysis, logic and argument are enough. In fact they are only a very small part of thinking. Research by David Perkins at Harvard showed that ninety percent of the errors in thinking were errors of perception and only ten percent were… Continue

I once suggested a change to the rules of soccer. When there is a draw then extra time is played. If there is still a draw there there is a penalty shoot-out. This introduces an element of luck. In addition if one side has a player good at penalty shooting then that side would win.

My suggestion would reflect the whole game. Every time the goalkeeper touched the ball that side gets a minus point. This would encourage attacks on goal and discourage passing back to the goal-keeper.… Continue

Hello sir, about ten years ago Mr paul rhys davies(a spinal surgeon from cardiff)told me that i was the second most natural lateral thinker he had ever met.The first obviously being yourself. At the time i did not have a clue what he was on about but after watching eggheads,a quiz show in britain,i finally got the message after there was a question about yourself. That was a couple of years ago and since then i joined this site to try and get some answers but everyone here says lateral thinking is learnt from your books or taught by your instructors/trainers and is not natural. No offence but i never even heard of you before my surgeon mentioned you to me and i have never read any of your books.Other people have said i'm a lateral thinker and a barrister once said i was doing cort4 which also i know nothing about,he said it was all nonsence even though what came out of my mouth was like a mathematical equation but in words instead.I have no natural intelligence but can always seem to solve real problems.I was hoping you know someone in the cardiff area that i could meet face to face to answer many of my questions, sorry to disturb you, yours sincerely david caruana.

Yes, I can imagine that the amount of travel you do has become a bit much. I was going to suggest you need to create some mini Edward DeBonos to send out in your stead.

I am sure the instructor network is a step in that direction. I would think though that you need five to ten people that can "come under the umbrella" of the personal brand. More than instructors in your methods these would be people that are seen as bringing your knowledge and capable of carrying on your work, fully empowered to "be you".

You might find this very interesting - it seems to reinforce the notion of "self organising patterning systems" in the brain.

By the way, we met in Dubai, it was an absolute pleasure. Since, I am certified in De Bono thinking tools!

You to me, like so many others, are an inspiration!

Best regards

Tauseef

Dear Dr De Bono, I have recently came around your literature and started reading books on thinking process and found it fascinating and very interesting. I would like to know more on the subject. How can I access tools on lateral thinking. Are there DVDs available on the subject? I would like to spread this process to my fellows/colleagues.

Edward,

Would it be possible to organise a meeting/discussion at the East India Club in St James Square at some point in November if your schedule allows. Thye topic would be some key apsects of Think! Before its too late.

I admire and respect your work and have a signifciant number of your books. It would be useful to have a complete list as I certainly do not have the complete suit of 81 books...

Also, I am intruged by your perspective in your boom Think! where you intimate that you would like others to take over the work on thinking that you have initiated. I would like to explore further with you whether you have any particular vision for how the mantle might be taken on in the future.

My contact number is (+44) 07900-263939
