In our forth podcast we discuss changing relationships between readers and journalists in the media

For our fourth podcast, Edward is joined by Dr. Chris Thorpe
the development advocate with the Guardian Newspaper. In a very interesting conversation
we discussed how the internet is changing the relationship between readers and
journalists in the media:

• The introduction of bi-directionality on the internet
• Lowering the barrier between journalists and reade… Continue

Football

I once suggested a change to the rules of soccer. When there is a draw then extra time is played. If there is still a draw there there is a penalty shoot-out. This introduces an element of luck. In addition if one side has a player good at penalty shooting then that side would win.

My suggestion would reflect the whole game. Every time the goalkeeper touched the ball that side gets a minus point. This would encourage attacks on goal and discourage passing back to the goal-keeper. After extra ti… Continue

Thinking tools/frameworks vs. discussion

Thinking tools/frameworks improve thinking skill much more than discussion does. One reason is that in discussion it's very difficult to pay attention to the thinking process rather than the content (because the content is interesting).

Understanding vs Use (of the thinking tools)

Understanding will never lead to use. Use can only come from habit and habit can only come from practice.

Thinking

In the end thinking is the only means we have for delivering human values. Yet no bookshop has a section devoted to thinking. No university has a faculty of thinking. Only a few schools have a subject called 'thinking'. That is because we have been so satisfied with limited traditional thinking.

"Ebne"

Recently, I invented a new word because there is a very real need for such a word. The word is 'ebne' which means 'Excellent But Not Enough'. If you want to change something you need to attack it. This is our usual dialectic thinking. We do not have an easy way of saying that something is excellent but not enough. The rear left wheel of a motor-car is excellent - but not enough for the functioning of a car. A chef who can cook the best omelette is excellent but not enough. Argument does have spe… Continue

You might find this very interesting - it seems to reinforce the notion of "self organising patterning systems" in the brain.

By the way, we met in Dubai, it was an absolute pleasure. Since, I am certified in De Bono thinking tools!

You to me, like so many others, are an inspiration!

Best regards

Tauseef

Dear Dr De Bono, I have recently came around your literature and started reading books on thinking process and found it fascinating and very interesting. I would like to know more on the subject. How can I access tools on lateral thinking. Are there DVDs available on the subject? I would like to spread this process to my fellows/colleagues.

Edward,

Would it be possible to organise a meeting/discussion at the East India Club in St James Square at some point in November if your schedule allows. Thye topic would be some key apsects of Think! Before its too late.

I admire and respect your work and have a signifciant number of your books. It would be useful to have a complete list as I certainly do not have the complete suit of 81 books...

Also, I am intruged by your perspective in your boom Think! where you intimate that you would like others to take over the work on thinking that you have initiated. I would like to explore further with you whether you have any particular vision for how the mantle might be taken on in the future.

My contact number is (+44) 07900-263939
