I would like to set up a journey to explore knowledge in each area of the six thinking hats.
It could be methodologies, knowledge, way of thinking, etc.
The output of our information gathering could be a list of books, movies, links, etc. Possible we could make all that knowledge accessible in a small e-book.

To illustrate my idea, some examples

- Red Hat: In his book Blink Malcolm Gladwell has described some excellent observations about `knowing immediately`.
- White hat: The same Malcolm Gladwell demonstrates the use of statistics to unravel societal developments
- Black Hat: recently I came across WikiRational, a wikipedia with critics on some standard accepted theories. Also, the whole literature of critical thinking belongs to the Black hat domain

etc.

Thanks. Looks interesting.

Recommended reading!

And helps to focus my thinking.

I think this is a perfect illustration of what the e/book could be: a sample of excellent readings, essays, hints, tools and trics about each hat. Both deepening understanding of the nature of each Thinking Hat, as providing help in executing thinking under a specific Thinking Hat.

About Yellow Hat, I am sure some participants of the discussion of positive news could help us.

Hi Gijs,
Great Idea!
And while we are waiting why don't we collect everything related to Yellow Hat Thinking in a document - perhaps a Google doc, where we can contribute to the same docment.
Great. Tomorrow I will see if I can open six documents for each hat, where we can store everything related to each Thinking Hat.
Then we can reserve this forum for discussions and working agreements
As a follow up of the discussion (see above) I did a PMI on

" exploring tools, ways of thinking, methodologies and theories which could be an extension, an addition or an elaboration of one of the hats of the Six Thinking Hats"

PLUS

+ deepens the understanding of the basic nature of each hat, as broad thinking directions

+ will reveal the hidden but basic or one-sided orientation of tools, f.e. merely Black Hat oriented

+ gives per Thinking Hat more handles to adress complex issues

+ will probably reveals gaps in tools, f.e. a lack in Red Thinking tools

+ reinforce the notion for the need to think structurally and in a systematic way, as contrary to wandering from point to point

MINUS

- could easily corrupt the simplicity of the Six Thinking Hats

- could led to muddled thinking by the overwhelming number of tools

- could let to put the tools in the foreground instead of the Six Hats as the primary basic thinking frame to start thinking with

- some tools would have a mix of overlapping Six Hats properties

INTERESTING

i could let to new tools, f.e. a YellowHat counterpart of Fault Tree Analysis, which is basically Black Hat thinking: “ Opportunity Tree Analysis”

i could let to the discovery of a 7th Thinking Hat f.e. System Thinking or Loop Thinking

i could help students, who are having difficulties to operationalize some Thinking Hats (f.e. e Blue or Red Hat Thinking, giving them more instruments

i could led to a simple software program at your desk, which integrates the Thinking Hats with the most sophisticated systematic thinking tools

i could let to more acceptance of Six Thinking Hats in the business, governmental and academic world
Gijs, looks very interesting.

I have had a bad thinking or lack of thinking day and I have not managed to write something down.

I will look at it later when I have finished today's work!
Hi Gijs,

Just adding to the list. Sorry it took so long. Not been the best week!

PLUS
+ explore the needs of different groups and how the hats could be targeted more specifically
+ explore how the red hats influence the other hats - particulary the black hat
+ explore ways to relax the brain so that the thinking can be maximised
+ encourage a broad approach

MINUS
- ?

Very interesting. I would suggest that the discussion is not how to extend the six hats, but how to use the six hats to review the realm of thinking as a skill. Then the six hats would be being used in the way they are intended, as a directed attention tool and a parallel thinking tool. Indeed, that is what the OPs example has done.

So each hat could be used to find techniques that do, to some degree, what the hat is about. Having created a body of such techniques they could be explored one at a time using the hats to consider their value and application, their insufficiencies and opportunities, and to suggest variation and to move on from those techniques to newly designed ones.

At another level we could look at how the techniques listed could be combined in various packages and work on the packages themselves, possibly redesigning the techniques to fit into more coherent packages.
I suggest that we start writing the ebook.

Since this is a project involving a group a people I suggest a formal approach to writing it. So the first step, apart from a working method, is to decided all the interesting (and boring) things that comes with writing a book - title, synopsis, plan the chapters etc.

These things usually help to determine the focus and the target group and also in the end whether it is worth writing the book;-)
A very good suggestion to produce results!

Title: To English native speakers: could you suggest a saying or proverb with the word Hats as a possible title of the book f.e ' How to greet with hats? '

Plan the Chapters:
part 1 The Six Thinking Hats
parallel thinking
six hats
(As it will be an e-book, I suggest to make the fullest use of already on the Internet published texts and videos)
part 2 Hat Supporting Thinking Tools
white hat (readings, tools, techniques)
  • technique 1
  • technnique 2
  • etc
  • Yellow hat
    Red Hat
    Black hat

    Blue hat

    Green hat

    part 3 Situations and sequences
Suggested by Danny: At another level we could look at how the techniques listed could be combined in various packages and work on the packages themselves, possibly redesigning the techniques to fit into more coherent packages.

    Target group:
    Six Hat users

    Synopsis
    Who volunteers?
HELP!

I tend to volunteer to things I cannot do.

I need MORE ideas for the synopsis!
Danny,

you just put it the right words, thank you.

`At another level` , that would be very interesting. We sure keep that in our mind
