Hole in the Ground
Just for fun I thought I would show you a video of Bernard Cribbin's "The Hole In The Ground" and do some general area focus thinking on it.

Shape
As well as round or square it could be triangular, pool shaped, hexagonal, or a series of shapes connected by channels.
Where
Garden, side of the road, middle of the road, the beach, on a farm.
PO Where a hole "ain't s'posed to be"
A hole in the living room, perhaps as a sunken chatting area, a cellar entrance, a pond feature.
A hole in the ocean? A submarine is a hole in the ocean surrounded by walls. A ship is a hole in the surface of the ocean. You can dam off an area below sea level as in a dry dock.
A hole in the air? A vacuum cylinder on top of a pedestal. You could lower a large ship hull from space so that it floats on the atmosphere.
How could you dig a hole in the Sun?
Focus on the displaced dirt
You could raise the edges of the hole to make it deeper with out going deeper into the ground.
You could make flower beds. Build sand castles. Refill the hole. The old cut and fill method for make a flat road surface through hilly terrain.
Focus on temporary, unstable holes
Drop a large rock in the water.
Set of an atomic bomb in the atmosphere.
Create a burrowing vehicle that shifts dirt from in front of the vehicle to behind the vehicle.

Focus on The Man In The Bowler Hat
You could use his hat to scoop the dirt back into the hole
You could ask him to grab the shovel and fill the hole in himself
You could take his hat off his head, put it in his hand and say "now get down there Mr and shovel dirt so's we can get this goddam hole moved afore sundown"
You could ask him for a cigarette so you might stop work and consider his proposal re the hole
You could ask him to leave his card so your secretary could get back to him later
You could ask him to lie in the hole while you covered him up with dirt
You might ask him whether he bought his umbrella in Paris or New York
You could use his umbrella to keep the sun off you while you smoked his cigarette and considered his proposal to move the hole
You could ignore the man completely -
