In Edward's book 'I am right, you are right", he says something like logic rarely sways a person's view, but perception (the way we look at things) does. He also talks about rock logic and water logic.

I'm not clear what the difference between logic and perception is, in regard to giving people an opportunity to change their view.

For an example, say I worked in a building where people were allowed to smoke. I didn't consider this acceptable, and wanted to educate the powers that be about the harm and discomfort of involuntary smoking and maximise the possibility that they would ban smoking in the workplace.

I realise you cannot control other people. Nonetheless, in this example, I think its appropriate to lobby for change.

What is the difference between using logic to present my point of view or using perceptions to present my point of view?

What are other people's understanding?

I believe both are needed. Logic is limited. But if the argument is illogically, the argument will not survive.
Not sure whether below statement is correct.

Logic
----

1 + 1 = 2

Perception
--------

1 + 1 = ANY FIGURE YOU WANT
Everything is logical because it's perception.
Case 1: Smoking calms my body – the effect of nicotine. Nicotine increase heart rate – risk of heart attack. Logic sells to people who think logically based on facts.

Case 2: Smoking is cool – it makes me feel sexy. Define ‘cool’! Let’s say it appearance. Smoking cause sign of premature aging and it ain’t cool anymore. This is perception selling. However, if the real motive is to be part of an elite group, it’s the wrong link as appearance may have nothing to with it.

You need to figure out what the other party really wants before you can influence him or her to change. The person sees cigarette give him/her value-added service. I’m sure everyone has some ego. If you can find his/her ego, press ‘Reset to Zero’ button and he/her will fight to death to protect his/her ego.
You've just broken out and are looking in.
Angelina Jolie is your cellmate
You've just won a lucrative prize for breaking into prison
Its your Fort Knox moment
You've just driven two stakes through a pair of vampires hearts
You've just heard about the repeal of the Bow Tie Law
Yes, having a witty, self-deprecating or goofy sense of humor should be something that is evaluated and required in being a teacher. In fact, it's the teacher who should be the "class-clown."

Any story about why the word "perception" was used instead of "point of view" by de Bono?? Because perception is an entirely different thing, really. I think of it as more like proprioception, vision, hearing, etc. The senses rather than an orientation of from which bias of self-interest and motive you are perceiving from. But I can understand the use of it. Was just curious.

Anyone else know about this? Wish de Bono read these threads, it would be great to hear from him.
Yes, in psychology we had a topic called perception. It was specifically on the senses and covered the physics and chemistry of how sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell worked.

The male lecturer once walked past me and entered the Ladies toilets. He came out in a hurry and said "you might have told me."

In I am right etc. Ed de B said there wasn't a word in the English language for "how we look at things" so he used perception. I think he uses it instead of 'point of view" because
(a) Perception is a single word
(b) To distinguish if from Other Person's Point of View
