I think there is need for this thinkers Society to do some lateral thinking on lateral thinking as well;it would be good for its grouth. There exist several concepts, such as Disruptive Thinking,Heuristic Thinking, out of the Box thinking,Innovative Thinking or Computational Thinking; which are in the neighbourhood of Lateral thinking. May be in terms of Cybernetic Thinking they can be interfaced to form a larger concept..

I am willing.
Let's ask Jakov, how to have a proper discussion.
Thanks for informing meabout Ken Bopp's initiative. Can I get his contact or link whereI could see his work? As for knowledge copy rights to my mind if trust is build then knowledge could be shared freely. We are talkiing of K economy and global mind sharing. Sooner or later people would realise that ideas better be shared else someone would discover them anyway. What needs to be monitored is its misuse.
Ken Bopp's proposal is here

Can we design tools to identify when lateral thinking time is "not justified", giving us permission to do lateral thinking, design thinking the rest of the time?

Just about peed myself when I read this. What a great idea.

Now, somebody answer me this, so we can design the tool:

when is LT not justified?

when standard procedures are up to the task? NOT

when there is nothing to think about? I think NOT (maybe when you are asleep, OK)

when you are dead, maybe. But you never know...
[Devilish Franis whispers:] Thinking back, I remember a time when Kim was making derogatory fun (of course, it was in a previous life!) when Adonis wanted to do more lateral thinking than Kim imagined was appropriate...for some reason then. Perhaps think back to that time?

OK...when is lateral thinking not justified?

When someone who matters to you (or the project itself) is not willing to challenge the status quo.

When that unwilling person is in charge and your job will be offered to someone else if you propose ideas that are not going to be understood or welcomed.

When someone else is footing the bill and they expect things to be done in a certain way, for instance, when there is a building code that must be followed.

When there is not time to design and/or implement a different solution. (What exists is good enough for a rough draft for now.)

When there is a learning curve involved with the new means - although it will be better in the long run, now is not the time to invest in it...because a deadline is looming, etc.

When materials do not exist, are expensive or are unavailable to accommodate the new means.

(For instance, I just did some art on a mailbox; to follow the fact that I was going to be using sign-writing paint, which is oil-based, to finish off the lettering, I used oil pastel to put the rough image on the mailbox. Once I got the image on with oil crayon, decided that I liked the crayon-like effect, so wanted to seal it as it was before I added the acrylic-based paint sky colors in the background. Alas! The clear sealer I have is acrylic-based and so isn't appropriate for sealing the oil crayons. So I must suspend the project until I find something else clear that will work with it, or stick with my original idea to use oil-based sign-writing paint to dissolve and anchor the oil pastel crayon to the surface of the primer. The operating idea here is that once you have committed yourself to a certain course of action, it's often a waste or may ruin the results to change your mind in mid-process. Therefore, lateral thinking can be done, but isn't particularly appropriate to implement right now.)

When you're likely to lose respect from others because they have formed the opinion that you are a bag of hot air with no practical action forthcoming

Creative Hit Lists.

Having created a hit list you can:
Keep it, add to it over time, remove items as they get tackled.
Throw it away and start again after each use.
Give it to someone else and ask them to give you a new hit list with no similar items on it.
Put the list items on separate bits of paper and draw them out of a hat to decide what to work on.
Prioritise thoughtfully and look for synergistic target choices.
Distribute hit list items amongst multiple working teams.

You may make a hit list by:
Thinking items up.
Find hit list items using random entry.
Create new items by doing reversal on previously thought of items.
There is vertical thinking and there is lateral thinking.
Vertical thinking comprises natural thinking, logical thinking, and mathematical thinking.
With vertical thinking you move only if a direction exists.
With lateral thinking you move in order to generate the direction.
Hi

It is also interesting to develop ideas for lateral thinking for specific disciplines. I am trying to do this for the field of technology and design, but they could inspire other fields too and vice versa.

Are you thinking along the lines of Edward's "Atlas of Management Thinking" where he showed how the tools apply in that area and catalogued a library of management concepts? That could be a great resource in the technology area, a catalogue of technology concepts and pointers for generating new ones or to move from old ones.
Hi Danny,

Yes, great idea. it could work two way...Show how the De Bono instruments apply to the D&T field, and look if tools from the D&T field could be generalized and turn into new ones...

I am quite new to De Bono work and not familiar with this specific atlas...Which book could I read..or site?

Remke
In the area of business I liked "The Atlas of Management Thinking"
and "Sur/petition"

Edward's tools are very generalised, so they should transfer easily to technology and design.

One question to lateral thinking is why we need lateral thinking. If we have a framework that can solve 99.9997%(6 sigma) of the problems, will it be more efficiency in using the framework? For example, do I need to use Einstein's relativity instead of Newton theories to calculate the motion of a normal car?

Under what conditions that using lateral thinking is more effective?
